I'm not sure what component is responsible for this, but I know it's not
acpid. ;)

The kernel is now exporting a special read-only alsa mixer for the in-
firmware mixer.  Whatever processes input events and translates them to
mixer changes and OSD notifications needs to do the same thing here by
*reading* changes on this mixer and generating the OSD notifications.
Maybe this is g-s-d?
