I e-mailed Oliver Goffart:

The bug is most likely related to the xine phonon backed. I noticed the
same problem. And if you configure knotify not to use phonon, or phonon
to use another backend, then the problem goes away.

The knotify keeps one Phonon::AudioOutput around, which maybe trigger
the bug. But that code has been contributed by Matthias Kretz, so I
guess he knew what he was doing.

I e-mailed Matthias Kretz:

Hi,

I am sorry, but I don't have enough time to look into this.

I do recall solving the issue of knotify showing up in powertop. It was
triggered by keeping a xine_stream inside the xine backend and by
clearing the MediaObject's MediaSource knotify became able to tell the
backend that it may go to a power-saving state (which in the xine
backend case meant to free the xine_stream).

I don't know what broke in the meantime.

Regards,
        Matthias

So, what’s next? It doesn’t look like we’re getting any step closer to a
solution.
