Using the official version http://gears.google.com/ I get the same "Linux_x86_gcc3 is not compatible". Using the repository xul-ext-gears (0.5.36.0~svn3423+dfsg-0ubuntu1) Firefox only starts the first time. In next run it just closes silently without errors. You have to remove 'compatibility.ini' (every time) from your profile.
