As I recall, Empathy feels the world should be fixed. This would be nice, but it is a long ways off. So, yes, they have switched the default IM to empathy, which has no real plans to support encryption in the foreseeable future (xmmp crypto someday?), but Pidgin/OTR will remain installable. Of course, soon enough, video/audio will be working in Pidgin.
