I'm having a similar problem: I had to install Lucid beta1 AMD64 with the 
nomodeset option because the X didn't work.
I have updated to the latest (29/03/2010) and when booting I see the ubuntu 
logo, but the animation doesn't work (the dots below ubuntu don't change their 
colour), later I get a mouse icon and I can move the mouse around (the 
background is still the booting ubuntu logo) and I hear the sound when gdm 
starts.

My computer it's a Fujitsu laptop, model: Esprimo mobile V6555
The VGA is: GeForce 9200M G
