Reinstalled ubuntu-desktop, rebooted. Same behaviour as before: clicking on either my username or on the 'other user' bar leads to the login screen fading out and coming back within a second. Loop-di-loop... The bar at the bottom of the screen is completely blank apart from the clock, so I can't choose any options for gnome to use.
