This occurred to me when i installed kubuntu-desktop and then i decided to uninstall it from my laptop. After that i log out and re login and the error occurred. Installing some packages at that time too and open firefox. Pidgin wasn't working well too and i think it was the removing of the kde and reinstalling of my gnome-desktop that result in the error.
