I have first tested this with the newest kernel version inside the
normal repository (2.6.31.20) and I seem to have more luck now. Suspend
works fine for multiple times. However, I did have the problem that the
first resume takes about 63 seconds and subsequent ones a more
reasonable time 3-4 seconds.

After examining dmesg I discovered that my dvb-usb kernel module was the cause. 
I have added the following lines to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and have no 
problems anymore:

blacklist dvb-usb
blacklist dvb_usb_dib0700
