In the future, can you please file such bugs with "ubuntu-bug" and
select the storage symptom? This will attach all required debug
information and do an interactive bug filing process.

For this one, can you please copy&paste the output of

  dpkg -l gvfs libgdu0 udisks
  
and

  gvfs-mount -d /dev/sdb1

(Use the actual partition of the USB device instead of /dev/sdb1, of
course). Does that work?

(For the record, mounting an encrypted USB stick works just fine here)

Alternatively, is it possible for me to get ssh access to the affected
machine, with the faulty device being plugged in? Second line
