I "solved" this by compiling the bleeding-edge compat-wireless drivers
from wireless.kernel.org. Have a look at
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download for instructions.

In the short run, this probably means that the problem is going to go
away once the linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.32-17-generic package
is built and installed (uninstall the compat-wireless drivers before
installing this package) . In the slightly longer run, it would be nice
if an updated iwlagn module could be included in the generic kernel
proper before release.
