True, it is not the ONLY way to get the user's attention. However, the current one (a small icon on the corner of the screen) is an *incredibly bad one*.
It's not just my opinion of the ones of all the people who's complained on this issue in this bug, but it's been well documented here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EmpathyVsPidginUsability Personally the first thing i do is indeed to install pidgin, however i think it's terribly bad for ubuntu as a whole to be inflicting empathy on new users in it's current state. Keep in mind first impressions count alot, so software that is installed by default should work well.
