Public bug reported:

My USB headset volume was at a good, comfortable audible level in
Karmic. I used it regularly for Skype calls and listening to music with
Banshee.

After upgrading to Lucid for the beta, sound through the headset sounded
unnaturally quiet. Too quiet for me to hear. I tried increasing the
volume under the sound preferences (click the Volume icon in the
notification area, select Sound Preferences, slide "Output Volume" to
the right) and fiddling with practically every audio setting I could
find.

In the end, I worked around the problem by running "alsamixer" in a
terminal and increasing the volume there. I couldn't help noticing that
the alsamixer slide was set to the lowest possible level above zero.

This might be bug 514032.
