@RK: Thanks! that did the trick. if anyone wants to copy this: you need to change to the directory where you want the link to be placed, then create the symlink. After that you can install the new kernel packages. I used these to test on Karmic http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2010-03-20-karmic/
