using vmware on Mac, installed ubuntu 10.4 everything was OK updated ubuntu (ca 113 updates) restarted machine didnt boot up. mess with /mnt/hgfs or similar, introduced in fstab through vmware tools commented this entry out, restarted ubuntu boot ok, login ok but gnome panel doesnt show up. starting gnome-panel in terminal works
