Sorry for the late reply. When I created the USB start up disk I only reserved the minimum of 128 Mb for files, so there may not have been enough free space. The partition on the USB memory card was 1.5 Gb. After I installed the OS from this live USB to another 4 GB USB SD card (i.e normal installation) I was able to upgrade the drivers no problem, although extremely slow.
