I installled the 9.10 in the same laptop which is Hp 6535s and have the same problem. When i start the OS, brightness is different from what i configured but it reverts back to my configuration as soon as i open the power management ( system<preference<power management ) I still have not tried with 10.04 but i feel this problem occurs only during start up... And i just noticed that when i remove the adapter the screen actually became brighter but dimmed after i put the plug in and out few times..
