I'm also caught by this bug. I have two groups: MSN and Google Talk. However, 
on Lucid 64-bit (my desktop), I never have the group "MSN" and all contacts 
which should be in MSN just appear in the 'root', without any group. On my 
desktop, telepathy-butterfly crashes a lot. See bug report #538062.
On my laptop I'm running also Lucid, but that's 32-bit. On that installation, I 
always have the group "MSN".

Both have version 2.29.92-0ubuntu2 installed.
