Thanks. I was able to get the drivers to work by downloading the .deb, removing all nvidia related packages (sudo apt-get purge nvidia) and then installing the deb. This was all done in RECOVERY MODE!!! (Hold shift while booting your computer to get into grub to select recovery mode.)
