** Description changed:

The top of the first page printed contains a small amount of corrupted
output. The rest of the page and subsequent pages in the same document
  are fine.

Same effect occurs whether printing from OpenOffice or Gedit.

Printer is a Brother HL5040 using CUPS foomatic/hl1250 driver and ipp
over the network to a Dapper server. Same problem with foomatic/hpijs
  driver.

Problem manifests in Feisty Herd 5 with or without updates to 13 March.

Steps to reproduce: Print any document - doesn't matter what. Observe
corrupt first lines, with garbled characters, random symbols etc.
+
+ EDIT: The above was with the printer created manually. If I let CUPS
+ find the server printer, the outcome is too much space at the top of the
+ page, as described in bug 82186. This may be the same bug.
