@Sebastien: That's quite possible it's a related bug. I noticed it happens with the sound indicator, too. It seems like the indicators become suddenly unaware of your current status (IM/sound level), default to off/none, and need to be reset for them to recognize it.
With the sound one, at least, it can be resolved just by changing the volume.
