Thought I'd chime in here and point out that none of the simple fixes mentioned in this thread were of any use. I was running XBMC Live 9.11 (Ubuntu 9.10 based). No Compiz to disable. Disabling CnQ in the bios did nothing. Putting the computer to sleep and waking it did nothing.
However, the less quick fix seems to have done the trick. Martin Benes's patch from post #44 (http://www.fi.muni.cz/~xbenes6/b44/b44.patch) still applies (mostly cleanly) to the b44 sources included with kernel-2.6.31-19. I ended up building a whole new kernel because I didn't really know what I was doing, but it works now. No drops even when streaming HD video across the LAN.
