I have recently found out that due to excessive files the syncdaemon is still busy reading the metadata at this stage. So the applet crashes while the data is still being read. Data being that much the syncdaemon can take up to 8 hours to read the data. link to bug about the slow read (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-client/+bug/436612)
