I also discovered that on my sony Vaio spicctrl cannot change brightness 
either. 
No matter which value you choose for

$ spicctrl -b=[value]

the brightness is set to zero and cannot be changed anymore without logging 
again.
In Edgy spicctrl was working correctly.

In essence, on my vaio s1 there seems to be no way to set brightness. It
is a real regression from Edgy.
