Update.  Just for grins I swapped out my Pioneer DVD RW and replaced it
with a Sony DVD RW.  Audio CD's are now detected and can be played.

I'm guessing that the Pioneer DVD drive has issues down shifting to 1X
for audio CD playback.

I can now rip and play audio CD's.
