In my opinion this is fixed.

example:

Enter a number to change any of them or press ENTER to continue: 3
Enter new version: 
>> 0.12 3

*** Warning: The package version "0.12 3" is not a
*** Warning: debian policy compliant one. Please specify an alternate one


Don't know if you have an example of an invalid version number that does not 
trigger a warning?
Changing status to fix-released (at least for Lucid it is.)

       Status: Triaged => Fix Released
