This happens because there are different revisions of this adapter. The latest one, B2 (id 07d1:3c0a), uses the 3070 chipset and the rt2800usb driver doesn't work with it. My solution was to build a 2.6.33 kernel with rt2800usb disabled and rt3070 FROM STAGING enabled. Hopefully that driver will go into mainline soon.
