Still working on it. Started git bisecting the mainline kernel but, given I dont know how the ubuntu releases match up against it, was pretty much a waste of time. I've since found the lucid repository and so am starting again against that. "Roughly 5 steps" sounds a hell of a lot better than "Roughly 14 steps" especially on an early Turion!
