Using TCP pings would add the need to parse the URL for a different port
than the default one of the used protocol. But it sounds like a good
solution.

I increased the number of ping workers from 5 to 25. It seems to work ok
here on my really slow Internet connection.

How many pings can we send at the same time until we get some bad side
effects? I am not an expert in networking questions.

I think using the top 5 and 2 random mirrors should be sufficient. Using
12 serial download tests really slows you down on small bandwith
connections.

If you find the time I would gladly apply a patch from you. I don't have
to the ressources to work on this feature in the next weeks.
