I agree that this is an overly aged and annoying bug, but the rhetoric
isn't really necessary.

As far as using xscreensaver - sure, it works. But it's nasty looking
(gtk 1.x?) and not very well integrated with Gnome. The lock screen
reminds me of the '90s!
