I have "gnome-volume-manager-gthumb %h" set in my removable drives and media preference dialog, and I was able to sucessfully import from my camera. Unfortunately, f-spot's still failing with an "Unknown error" when I launch f-spot and ask it to import from the camera (which it appears to detect correctly).
