we have had other bugs on usplash failing, at varying places. Unfortunately, so far, none of the stack traces are not complete (i.e. no debugging information). Also, all of them are on a i386 architecture.
You two are the only I have seen so far with x86_64. The problems *might* be related -- I do not know --, so I am hoping we can grab a good backtrace from one of them and work on it.
