by default teh video driver detection will set all drivers to 24bit, try to set X_COLOR_DEPTH=16 in your /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf (/opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/doc/ltsp-client/examples/lts-parameters.txt.gz has a list of other accepted options)
