This bug affects me on a Dell Latitude D820 running Karmic 9.10 up to
date. I do not run gnome-screensaver; instead I use xscreensaver. I
upgraded from Jaunty, so this is not a clean install. This worked
properly for me in Jaunty.

The status of /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state reflects the correct
state. If I change the power manager settings for AC power to suspend on
lid close, it works both when on AC power and on battery. If I set
battery power to screen blank instead of suspend, it will still suspend
if AC power is set to suspend. So gnome-power-manager seems to think I'm
on AC power at all times for this. However, the backlight brightness
changes when going to battery, so gnome-power-manager should know about
the power state.
