Thank you for your query. I finally ditched Karmic and newly installed
Jaunty kubuntu 32bit. I had way too many problems with audio, in Karmic,
which I need in my work.

I fear for the direction of Ubuntu as a distro. I left Fedora and the
rpm world, after being a loyal Red Hat user and later as an employee,
for as long as they have been around. Ubuntu is doing the very same
thing that Fedora was guilty of, but at least Fedora was upfront about
being a testbed of beta half-baked softwares. The helluvit is that I
don't know what distro to turn to. I just need stable. I just need to
use my computer, and to convince the State of North Carolina to use
Linux for our prison re-entry program. But, routine updates routinely
breaks things that worked. At least with Jaunty it's pretty calm, but
packages are no longer being updated.

I'm merely disappointed, and not a sorehead. Mark Shuttleworth promised
a stable platform, but there are devels out there that want to push the
envelope. I merely want the "Right Thing" and for Ubuntu to carry that
banner. Thanks again for your inquiry. Ric
