I'm not an IT guy, but I am having problems with high CPU usage. Always over 90% on a fairly new install of Ubuntu running on a Pentium 4 on a Toshiba Satellite 1905-s301. What I did come to realise is that it happens only when I 'look' at the system monitor resources. I updated the preferences: graph update rate to 10 sec, Process update rate to 17sec, and File system to 29sec. Now my CPU History graph slips by at a cool 15%.
