Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-i810
As Edu pointed out on bug 71364, since an upgrade to feisty, sooming in below a certain distance causes the map to disappear, being replaced by some kind of fog. I can confirm the issue, since I get exactly the same thing shown on Edu's screenshots.
