I have a similar problem in karmic with KDE 4.4 installed (from kubuntu- ppa backports).
However, shared-desktop-ontologies was already installed by default. Search in dolphin AND krunner does not return any results at all (krunner only returns installed programs). arstechnica.com seems to have the same problem: "I didn't have much luck getting the search feature to work in Dolphin during my tests, but I suspect that the problems I encountered were due to distro integration issues."
