Thanks for the output. It looks as though SANE is connecting to your scanner, but is unable to maintain this connection when any other application attempts to access the sanner.
I am assigning this bug to the sane-backends package, which seems to be the cause of the problem. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Lucid Lynx. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu.
