I experienced this issue on my Gentoo system. According to http://vbox.innotek.de/pipermail/vbox-trac/2007-July/105390.html , it may be due to a system clock time slip.
And in fact, ntpd was adjusting the time slightly. After I killed ntpd and restarted the guest, everything worked fine again.
