I have same problem on ASUS k52jr laptop. I try install xubuntu 9.10 i386 and have no problem with network - all works fine. Under windows 7 all works fine too. But under ubuntu 9.10 amd64 - not any wired connection aviable. When I manualy setup /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolv.conf. After that ifconfig show right IP properties but network still won't work.
