Public bug reported:

If the Visual Effects are set to either "Normal" or "Extra" in
Appearance, subsequently unable to click in the foreground on buttons on
windows such as "close" etc. Can't select items from Synaptic Package
Manager. Menu selections appear unaffected. Setting the Visual
Effects back to "None" restores operation. Normal operation is also
achieved if system started with "Failsafe Gnome". This was working
earlier today, and may possibly be due to recent updates loaded onto the
system.

Have tried re-installing both GDM and Compiz, but same problem persists.
