I had the same issue with Lucid in VirtualBox 3.1.4beta2. It only
started happening in the last week after I extensively edited xorg.conf
to try and get displaylink drivers working. I fixed it by removing
everything from xorg.conf except for:

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "VBoxMouse"
        Driver "vboxmouse"
        Option "CorePointer"
EndSection

Lucid's X doesn't seem to auto-detect the vboxmouse driver, and without
it the mouse is blank in VBox when 3d effects are enabled.
