This really is crap. Ubuntu users have to make a choice between basic hardware functionality and security now?
For a really simple workaround (which assumes you previously installed 2.6.31-18 from proposed, and that may leave you insecure), hold down shift as you boot so that the grub menu displays, then click down to the previously installed 2.6.31-18 using the down arrow, and press enter.
