I logged in with effects set to none. Uninstalled the compiz components as per the forum post then reinstalled. Set-up compiz icon and then turned on my preferred effects in CCSM. Finally turned on effects and everything seemed to work. Have restarted and turned off the PC several times now and I have yet to suffer from the freeze. I do not know what has 'fixed' this, but if you require any further logs from my PC then let me know.
