My desktop, an emachines dual core freezes in Lucid since yesterday's
OpenOffice and other upgrades. No flashes, beeps or boops, it just
freezes. The Karmic partition is fine.

It will function for a few minutes, but always freezes when trying to
check for updates, whether with the update manager, the terminal or
Synaptics. The power button is my only relief.

My laptop Lucid partition is unaffected. The only difference I can
remember yesterday is that the laptop refused to upgrade yesterday until
I unchecked an OpenOffice bin file (which unckecked all the other OO
upgrades) and installed the other items first. I was then able to
download and install OO 3.2 without any negative effects.

The desktop upgrade did not produce an error and upgraded everything at
once. After a reboot, the freezing started.

I don't keep any personal documents on the Lucid desktop partition, but
if I have to re-install, it will be the third time, and I'll likely wait
for the official release. Alphas don't seem to like ATI/Nvidia cards.

I can't find a way to get into a terminal. The recovery mode stops
booting before the console appears, and if I press Ctrl+Alt+F2 I just
get a few white blocks on the monitor. No input is possible.
