I just did "apt-get --purge autoremove python2.6-minumal python2.6" and re-installed that, plus all the packages it took out. so far so good, except that a number of packages simply can no longer be configured again. Among other things, a number of daemons complain that they cannot start because "udev" is not running. It of course is, but it's been converted to an upstart job, which those daemons' init scripts don't like.
