Just a chance here. Have you enabled the mixer by double-clicking the
speaker and turning it on? I know that is a silly question, but in
xubuntu, the mixer is not enabled by default. After turning on some
controls, right-click the speaker in the panel and left-click
properties. Then select your sound system and click okay. Now the sound
might work.
