Is this problem still not fixed??? How many months is this now?? This bug, for many people, provides seriously reduced functionality with a large impact on the way people use laptops.
I am the original poster of this bug and I got around this a few months back. I installed Debian Lenny on my laptop. Ubuntu is built around Debian, while Ubuntu has newer versions of almost everything, it lacks the stability of Debian (In a much broader sense than the limited confines of this bug). This external monitor Ubuntu bug is not an issue at all in Debian.
