This bug has affected me in both Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10, on a laptop and PC, with the associated latest compatible releases of Open Office. The only fix for it that I have found is to remove the Ubuntu Open Office installation and replace it with the one from openoffice.org (which introduces other stability issues).
I noticed the problem in Presentation (Impress) under 9.04, and Writer in 9.10.
