Here is the log from strace. In order to keep X from greying out Plymouth and generating about 40MB of logs, it was run for 2 seconds from a script including the message command. I also attached the script I used to quickly call the splash, then the message, in X after manually starting plymouthd as root and attaching it to strace.
As I said before, same results in boot-no messages from Cryptsetup, nor from a message test script (conf file) in init either.
